The Beckoning Beyond
"Forgive me, Ancestors," whispers the girl. "Please." Her footsteps carry her through the windswept streets, past the ducks hanging in the windows, past the lanterns, past the skyscrapers until she stands at a street light, blinking, unmoving from the flashing beacon of scarlet. A copper tinge, blood, taints her nostrils and she cries out as memories converge upon her like vultures. A vision appears, misty dreams. He reaches for her, his silky, fiery hair covering what she knows to be green eyes. He calls out, a single word, which she recognizes. It's her name; he's calling to her.
